South Bend Wedding Photography | A New Brand
I can already hear the questions now… “What was wrong with Guided Light Photography?”, “Why did you change it to Katie Whitcomb Photographers and not Photography?”, and even “Is Chris not photographing anymore?” I will answer your questions, one at a time. You know, press conference style. Okay, maybe not, but I will tell you why I felt the need to change the name and the brand.
First of all, I was never really confidant with the name of Guided Light Photography. It irritated me from one end of the earth to the other when someone would say “It reminds me of the soap opera” or if they would simple call us “Guiding Light Photography.” I may be a little dramatic (I am girl after all), but when it comes to my business, I don’t like the drama. I really wanted something that I was going to feel confidant with that was perfect for who I am as a person. I began the journey of digging deep within myself around Christmas time and we played around with names. We decided that making it Chris and Katie Whitcomb was just asking for a law suit, from Calvin Klein. I mean, the logo would have to be CK. We decided to leave Chris’ name out of it, plus I wanted something very feminine, clean and let’s face it, he’s known as “the man without a face” to most of our brides (until the wedding day). And thus, Katie Whitcomb Photographers was born.
The process was really grueling and at times I wanted to give up and just stick with Guided Light Photography. We had talked about changing the name in late 2008, early 2009 but decided that we didn’t want to worry about the craziness of the change. I can’t even describe the fear that I had going into this change. What about the SEO that I’ve (this should read Chris worked his butt off but I’ll let it slide-cw) been working my tail off to get us up there in rankings? What about the contracts that we currently have for the 2010 wedding season? What will I have to do to keep the IRS happy? I decided to SUCK IT UP and just go for it. Once we started, I fell more and more in love with it that I honestly expected.
The idea behind Katie Whitcomb Photographers is very clean, simple, timeless and yet is still somewhat “designer”. If there is one thing that I always have at the fore-front of my mind when I’m photographing is “will my client like her wedding images 10 years from now?” I believe that the branding for Katie Whitcomb Photographers really portrays this “timeless” feel.
This launch was highly anticipated and I am so pleased to finally have it complete. I am confidant that the research that went into the new brand will shine through in the upcoming wedding season and you can expect big things from Katie Whitcomb Photographers.
