In 2004, I came home from college and ran into a girl at Martin’s Supermarket that I went to elementary school with and we decided to get together. While we were hanging out, she said she was dating this guy and he had a friend. At first, I wanted nothing to do with a blind date, but I gave in and met Patrick.

One of my biggest pet peeves is getting poor customer service at a restaraunt. I was getting my hair done and Patrick told me to meet him for dinner at Logan’s Road House. People were getting seated before us non-stop and it was really starting to get on my nerves. I went up to the hostess and told her that they were seating people that came in well after we got there so she kicked a couple out of their table and put us in their booth. I felt so bad because of course I didn’t mean they had to move someone, I just wanted to sit down and eat. When we started getting our orders, they messed everything up. Nothing I ordered came to me the way I ordered it. So, the waitress asked if I wanted to see the manager. When the manager came out he asked if there was anything he could do to make it up to me because he wanted my night to be memorable and then he brings these flowers out from behind his back and Patrick was on one knee proposing. I was floored. Patrick had everything set up and everyone was in on it.

I really wanted something summery and fresh, elegant but not too formal that you couldn’t have a good time. I wanted to have a night club feel to it because we love to dance. I knew I wanted the lights around the room because I had seen it in enough weddings online, but Patrick liked the idea of turning them blue because it gave the hot summer night a cool feel to it. It turned out perfectly.

When I was 17, my dad was dropping me off to a church function at the Winsor Park Convention Center. It was set up for a wedding and he told me that night that one day that was where I would have my wedding reception. We chose Grace United Methodist Church because we went to a friend’s wedding there a few years ago and we knew that it was a beautiful church to get married in. (side note from the photographer: This is the church that my parents, Chris’ parents, my sister, and Chris & I got married. We both have huge family ties to this church which made this wedding just that much more special to us.)

I started researching online to find the right photographer. When I came across Katie Whitcomb Photographers (then, Guided Light Photography), I loved that the site was very professionally put together. When my mom and I met with Katie, I loved that she just understood who I was and what I wanted. I especially loved that they were a husband and wife team and Patrick and I would have our own personal photographer for the day. My brother was planning his wedding at the same time so I told Curtis & Joy that they had to check them out too. They took my advice and just look at how their wedding turned out.

I have never really liked going to a wedding in my high heels and then waiting in a buffet line. I wanted it to be sit down dinner so everyone would be served. The dish gave people an option of what they could eat and the options for the vegetarians were amazing.

Continuing with the summer theme, I knew I wanted tall centerpieces with yellow and white because flowers were naturally those colors. I like the idea of tying navy ribbon around the chairs to bring in the blue. I had the idea of adding lemons to the centerpieces to remind you of summer and it being fresh.

I love moist cake and I researched to find out what some really great flavor combinations there was available. We did a five layer cake with layers like: Pink Champaign with strawberry, Chocolate with raspberry and ganache, a simple White with butter cream, and the top layer was White with pineapple.

When I was searching through magazines to find my dress, I asked Patrick what he thought of each one so I could get an idea of what he might like on me. He would either tell me if he thought it was bangin’ or not bangin’. I was so nervous when I was walking down the aisle and the moment I got up to Patrick, he whispered to me “Your dress is bangin’.” It completely put me at ease.

You really need to be a control freak about the details. On the day, have someone there to take control of the details, but you will at least know the answers if someone asks. Giving someone that control will really help you to enjoy your day.
