South Bend, Indiana Engagement Photography | Nicole & Jason

This post is seriously beyond overdue. Nicole and Jason, you are truly a couple after my own heart. Nicole first came to me last year looking for a photographer for her wedding (which is tomorrow by the way). She was having a hard time finding someone that she really connected with their images (and was close), but when she found our website and saw that we were close, it was the best of both worlds.

I instantly connected with Nicole as she’s always been the photographer in the family and fell in love with a man that was significantly older than her, as have I. The more I’ve gotten to know them, the more I adore their story and their commitment to one another.

I am so excited for their wedding tomorrow. It’s going to be beautiful.

William and Nicole first met in a dining hall at Purdue University early freshmen year. Their memories are very faint of what actually occurred during their quick lunch together, but Nicole knew that he was amazing and perfect for her.  Despite William not calling her when he had her number, she knows he liked her too! For the next year, William and Nicole saw each other around campus, especially the dining hall. Fortunately, the two students had biology lab together.  While William learned about cells, Nicole just studied William. Halfway through the semester, William and Nicole finally went on their first date and have been inseparable since.

After announcing to both his and Nicole’s parents that he had purchased a ring, William proposed to Nicole at Purdue where it all began.  He completely surprised Nicole by telling her they were attending an open house at the Ross Ade Pavillon (football stadium sky box), where she always jokes about attending games as alumni together. After the door being locked and having to call to get let in, Nicole was guided to the 5th floor for the surprise of her life.  Nicole noticed rose pedals on the floor but was still clueless as to what to expect.  Overlooking the campus, was a table setup with a picture of the couple, a card and flowers awaiting Nicole. Instantly she begins crying and attempting not to mess up her make-up. After reading in the card “You are so suite!”, Nicole laughs that he spelled sweet wrong. Next the couple follows the rose pedals into the suite and it all makes sense. Inside the suite, were more flowers and a picture with a small empty box. Looking confused not to find a present, Nicole looks up and William presents her with a beautiful engagement ring.

I wanted it to feel heavenly, so that’s why I wanted blue, white & silver.

We found our reception venue at Elkhart’s Bridal Show. They had a great, inexpensive menu to choose from. More importantly the location was perfect and the hall was beautiful.

There was a good connection I felt when I first met with you. I really liked the quality and style of your photos and your attention details.

We really wanted to incorporate our Boilermaker pride without being tacky, so we decided on a Purdue table to have all our black and gold decorations, candy and amazing Purdue groom’s cake. In addition to the photo booth, it served as a wedding favor.

I wanted the wedding to be simply, classic and elegant, so I choose a white rose with blue tips.

Although we wanted to be simple, we also wanted a slight variety, so we have a square 4-tier cake with blue ribbon on each tier and our monogram on top.

Don’t over do it! Simple makes it short and sweet. Also, plan not to be busy the day before or day of the wedding. Just enjoy your family and friends.

First, I’d like to apologize for my lack of blogging this past month. We are very fortunate to have so many friends and family that have been there for us with the passing of Chris’s mother and step-father less than a month from one another and Bryce’s diagnosis of Autism. It has been a very difficult month, but we are looking forward to making changes to our business this fall to accommodate the life changes that God has given us.

I have about 3 weddings and approximately 20 portraits sessions to blog so please be patient with me. I’ll get them up, by the end of the year. :)

Rich & I actually met through my family. He’s worked at my family’s business for years, and we became friends over time. He helped me move back from Colorado in November 2007, and we’ve been together ever since that cross-country drive.

Katie.Whitcomb.Photographers_stephanie.and.rich.beginning

katie_whitcomb_photographers-choosing_the_proposal Rich proposed at Fiorentino’s, where we had our first date in Chicago. It was perfect.

I wanted our wedding to feel summery and bright and preppy. Since we were getting married and celebrating outdoors, I really wanted to incorporate green. And navy has been my go-to color for years, so it was a no-brainer.

We chose Taltree Arboretum because of how beautiful it is, and I knew I wanted to have the ceremony outside. As my family and the Gamba’s have been great friends for years, we were lucky enough to hold our reception in a tent at Gamba Ristorante. There is no better dining experience, and I knew the food and service would be nothing short of perfect. I was right.

katie_whitcomb_photographers-choosing_the_photographer

I actually chose our photographer based on a recommendation from a friend of mine, Alana Kinnis. A photographer herself, she was unavailable to shoot our wedding day, but suggested Katie Whitcomb Photographers. I had total faith in Alana’s judgment, and loved what I saw on the blog.

We chose to have a plated dinner, which was fantastic – or so I hear. The bride doesn’t get a chance to eat! Our wedding cake was an atomic cake, which is Rich’s favorite dessert from Gamba’s. Yes, they even made our cake for us, too!

Our florist, Patrick Fabian of House of Fabian, is a family friend. We met several years ago, after my mom started visiting his shop and he began doing our Christmas decorations. He is not only the best florist I’ve seen, but he’s truly one of the nicest people you’ll meet. He knew exactly what I wanted, even when I didn’t. I couldn’t possibly recommend him enough. He even decorating our flower girl’s wagon!

Our cake was really Rich’s territory. He is the one with the sweet tooth, so he chose the flavor. We didn’t even have a tasting, he knew immediately what he wanted after eating at Gamba’s for years! We kept the design simple to fit in with our classic, summery theme. Just white with navy detail and green flowers.

katie_whitcomb_photographers-best_moment_of_the_day

The best moment for me was right before Rich & I were introduced. We were standing alone right outside the tent, excited to finally be married and to start the party! All the nerves were gone, and we were just happy to have our closest friends there to celebrate with us.

katie_whitcomb_photographers-advice_for_brides

My best advice is that as much as you plan, there’s an equal amount that is unplanned. It doesn’t go exactly how you thought it would on your wedding day, but embrace it. I received this advice from a bridesmaid, and it’s really true: your goal is to get married. No matter what happens that day, you’re still going to end the day as married. And isn’t that the whole point?!
